MONSANTO VILLAGE IN PORTUGAL WAS BUILT BETWEEN ROCKS


Monsanto is an old fortified village perched on the side of the mountain situated to the southeast of the Serra da Estrela in Portugal. His appearance has not changed in centuries. The narrow streets are carved from rocks. The houses appear tight between huge cliffs. This historic village is one of the most remarkable in Europe. It is often cited as the most Portuguese village in Portugal. At the top of the 400 m high mountain stands a very old, fortress built / castle square. The castle which played an important part in medieval times, when the Grand Master of the Templars built a castle, which resisted several battles, including the Napoleonic invasions. The walk to the castle is rewarded by one of the most breathtaking views in the entire region.
